What is Agentforce? Salesforce AI agents explained for 2026

Chris Uhrig September 11, 2026 · 7 min read

Agentforce is Salesforce’s enterprise-wide AI platform for building and managing autonomous AI agents for service, sales and marketing. Unlike classic chatbots, these agents make their own decisions, access real-time company data and run complex workflows without human intervention.

At a glance
  • Agentforce is a platform that lets you deploy and control autonomous AI agents at scale.
  • The agents use the Atlas Reasoning Engine to understand intent, build plans and execute actions in connected systems.
  • Unlike script-based chatbots, the AI agents respond dynamically based on your current CRM data.
  • Typical use cases are 24/7 customer service, sales support and the automation of marketing tasks.
  • Platform usage is billed flexibly through so-called Flex Credits, which follow actual consumption.

What is Agentforce from Salesforce?

In companies, artificial intelligence is evolving from a pure writing tool into an active part of automated business processes. This is exactly where Agentforce AI comes in. It is not a single tool but a comprehensive infrastructure within the Salesforce ecosystem. The platform bundles company knowledge, customer interactions and CRM data into one unified layer on which intelligent agents operate.

The Agentforce architecture rests on several core components that work together to make this automation reliable:

The Atlas Reasoning Engine acts as the brain of the platform. It enables an agent to understand what a user actually wants. Instead of merely scanning for keywords, the engine evaluates the context, decides on the best course of action and carries out the necessary steps in a logical order.

The Agentforce Builder is the central workspace. This is where your teams design, test and activate the AI agents. The builder is a low-code environment, so business administrators without deep programming skills can work with it too. You use familiar tools such as Flows, prompts and MuleSoft APIs to define what the agents do.

Another important feature is Agent Script. It combines the predictability of fixed workflows with the flexibility of large language models (LLMs). In practice this means: if a process requires a strict compliance check, the agent follows the prescribed sequence exactly. At the same time, the LLM can answer unexpected follow-up questions from the user in natural language without having to abort the process.

Chatbot vs. AI agent: what is the difference?

Many companies already use chatbots. These systems usually follow a predefined script. When a customer asks where their order is, a classic chatbot often just returns a tracking link.

An AI agent works fundamentally differently. It perceives its environment, makes decisions and acts. Asked the same question about the order, the agent identifies the customer, retrieves the relevant order data from the CRM, checks the current status in the ERP system and turns that into a precise answer. If necessary, it triggers a reshipment directly or hands the case over to a human colleague with a complete summary.

An AI agent links customer data, CRM and ERP into one answer and triggers an action directly when needed.

The distinction from existing AI assistants matters too. Einstein is natively integrated into the Salesforce platform and delivers insights, forecasts and text drafts right inside the user’s workflow. Einstein assists the human. Agentforce, by contrast, acts autonomously and proactively within the guardrails you set.

How does Agentforce work in practice?

According to a 2026 Bitkom survey, 57 percent of German companies with 20 or more employees use artificial intelligence. With autonomous AI agents, however, many are still at the beginning: only 11 percent use them so far. Worldwide, according to Salesforce, more than 25,000 companies have already implemented Agentforce solutions. The use cases span every core area of a business.

In customer service, Agentforce for Service provides support that is available around the clock. The agents answer questions, resolve cases and fix problems on their own. That shortens response times and lowers operating costs. When a problem becomes too complex, the agent escalates the case to the service team.

In sales, the agents take over tasks that would otherwise eat up valuable time. They answer prospects’ product questions on their own, handle first objections and book appointments straight into the sales reps’ calendars. Automated summaries of customer interactions and research cut the manual workload for the sales team considerably. Real-time recommendations based on AI analysis also make forecasting more precise.

In marketing, the agents automate communication. They send out event information, book sessions for attendees and provide surveys. With variants such as Agentforce Vibes you make sure the generated answers match your brand voice and your company’s communication guidelines exactly.

There are also approaches such as the Agentforce Coworker. These are highly specialised agents used internally. They support your employees in answering internal policy questions or automating routine tasks, which noticeably raises productivity in everyday work.

What does Agentforce cost?

Salesforce does not bill the use of its AI agents through rigid per-interaction licences but uses a consumption-based model. The currency is so-called Flex Credits. Companies buy a pool of credits that can be used flexibly for different AI functions and agent activities. A simple data query consumes fewer credits than a complex, multi-step problem resolution by the Atlas Reasoning Engine. The exact cost therefore depends directly on how intensively, and for which use cases, the autonomous agents work in service, sales or marketing. This model allows mid-sized companies to start small and expand capacity deliberately as demand grows.

What are the prerequisites for using it?

The performance of an AI agent does not come from the underlying language model alone. What matters is the interplay of AI, your company data, the business logic and the permissions.

Agentforce absolutely requires high data quality. The agents need a unified knowledge base to make correct decisions. Structured CRM data, external data sources (for example from Data 360), documents and communication streams all feed into one central model. If your data sits in isolated silos or is outdated, the agent will draw the wrong conclusions.

Security is another important aspect. Agentforce ships with robust security guardrails by default. These tools prevent the agents from deviating from the prescribed script or processing sensitive data without protection. You define clear guardrails within which the AI may operate. That way you make sure the automation stays reliable and the risk of inaccurate or biased answers is minimised.

Who is behind Salesforce and what exactly does the company do?

When you look into Agentforce, you often run into basic questions about the vendor itself. Who is behind Salesforce? It is a US software company headquartered in San Francisco and one of the world’s largest providers of cloud computing solutions.

What exactly does Salesforce do? Its core product is a customer relationship management (CRM) platform. This software helps companies capture and manage all interactions with customers, prospects and partners in one place. On top of that, Salesforce offers specialised modules for sales (Sales Cloud), customer service (Agentforce for Service) and marketing.

What does “Salesforce” mean? Taken literally, the term roughly means “sales force” or “sales team”. In practice, however, the word is used exclusively as the brand name of the software platform.

Occasionally the term “agent exe” shows up in search engines in connection with Agentforce. This is a mix-up. The “.exe” file extension stands for executable programs on Windows. Agentforce, however, is a purely cloud-based platform. There is no local file called “agent.exe” that you would need to download or install.

What is an agent (or “force agent”)?

An AI agent is an autonomous software application that plans and executes tasks on its own. The term “force agent” is often used colloquially for the agents that run on Salesforce’s Agentforce platform. They analyse the context of a request, make decisions and trigger actions in connected systems.

Is Agentforce suitable for mid-sized companies?

Yes. Thanks to the low-code approach of the Agent Builder and the consumption-based cost model via Flex Credits, mid-sized B2B companies can introduce AI agents too. You can start with one concrete, small use case in customer service and later extend the system to sales or marketing.

Will AI agents replace my staff in service and sales?

No. AI agents take over recurring, time-consuming routine tasks such as booking appointments, answering standard questions or summarising records. As soon as a case becomes too complex or requires emotional intelligence, the agent hands it over seamlessly to a human colleague. Employees are relieved of routine work and can focus on more demanding tasks.
