GEO in B2B Marketing: Platform Choice Beats Content Volume

Paula van Besel October 17, 2026 · 4 min read

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) decides in B2B marketing whether your brand appears in the answers of AI search engines such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. A recent study shows that AI models pick up new technical terms within seven days when they are published on established third-party platforms. For your visibility, the choice of platform therefore matters far more than the sheer amount of content on your own company blog.

At a glance
  • All four major English-language AI search engines cited a completely invented concept within one week in a test.
  • A single post on a platform that AI engines weight heavily creates more visibility than forty articles on your own blog.
  • AI engines sometimes repeat deliberately placed misinformation, which creates new governance risks for brands.
  • A technically clean website with structured data remains the mandatory foundation for any AI visibility.
  • B2B companies ideally shift their budgets from pure mass content production to targeted platform seeding.

Why the platform beats content volume

Researchers at Fudan University investigated how quickly AI search engines absorb new information. To do so, they placed articles about a completely invented concept, the “Cactus Gravity Protocol”, on the web. The result: within just seven days, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok and Google AI cited the term in their answers.

The place of publication made the difference. A single post on a platform frequently referenced by AI engines was enough to be used as a source. In direct comparison, even 40 published posts on a self-hosted WordPress blog did not produce a single mention within those seven days. AI search engines prefer platforms that allow user-generated content. For Google AI and Grok, Reddit was the most cited site, Perplexity was dominated by YouTube, and ChatGPT by Wikipedia. For your digital marketing strategy this means: external platforms get you into the AI answers.

How do I get cited by AI engines like ChatGPT?

Language models cite content that answers specific technical questions better than interchangeable summaries. AI systems prefer sources that show real expertise: first-hand experience, concrete measurements, images from real projects and verifiable evidence. The technical basis for this remains classic SEO. GEO only works with clean HTML and a clear page structure. Using structured data according to Schema.org helps the AI understand who the expert is and what the core message of the page is. If you take this into account in your architecture and tool selection, language models can extract your content easily.

What risks do AI answers pose for brand management?

The rapid adoption of content by AI search engines brings tangible governance risks. In the study mentioned, the researchers deliberately built false details such as invented names and figures into their texts.

This placed misinformation flowed directly into the models’ answers. Grok integrated the false details in 53 percent of its answers, ChatGPT in 10 percent and Google AI in 6 percent. Only Perplexity filtered out this specific misinformation completely in the test. Anyone working with AI in marketing has to monitor third-party platforms actively. False quotes or negative claims about your company spread at breakneck speed through AI answers, and you have no direct control over the platform that delivers them.

GEO and SEO: the new division of labour

B2B search is shifting towards zero-click search. Users receive complete answers directly on the AI platform without visiting your website. SEO brings you the traffic of users who want to compare and browse deliberately. GEO secures your place in the AI’s direct answer. The purchase decision is often made exactly there.

A well-thought-out AI strategy combines both disciplines. You build a digital presence that AI systems classify as a reliable source. Pure page optimisation for Google takes a back seat.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace classic SEO now?

No, GEO complements SEO. A technically flawless website with clean HTML and structured data is the prerequisite for an AI to capture your content at all. Without this foundation, GEO does not work.

When does optimising for GEO start to pay off?

Right away. Users rely on AI search more and more often. Anyone who does not optimise their content for generative engines will soon no longer appear in the automated answers for their target group.

What is the difference between GEO and AIO?

GEO focuses specifically on making content citable for generative search engines. AIO (Artificial Intelligence Optimization) is the overarching strategy, which also covers custom GPT configurations or optimisation for voice assistants.
